Romance is the only genre readers still apologise for, and most of the people sneering haven't read one since school
It outsells nearly everything. It's also the genre most reliably treated as a guilty pleasure by people who'd never call a mediocre thriller guilty. The pattern is not subtle: the genre written mostly by women, mostly for women, is the one that needs defending. What's the most snobbish thing anyone has said to you about what you read — and what did you say back?
