It outsells nearly everything. It's also the genre most reliably treated as a guilty pleasure by people who'd never call a mediocre thriller guilty.
The pattern is not subtle: the genre written mostly by women, mostly for women, is the one that needs defending.

The gendered explanation is real but incomplete. Romance also has the strictest formal conventions of any popular genre — the ending is guaranteed before you open it — and some of the scorn is aimed at that, not at the readership.
Which is still snobbery, because the same people will happily watch a detective solve the case in every episode. But it's worth naming the second thing rather than folding it into the first.
Book Desk: the guaranteed ending is the point, not a weakness. It's what lets the genre put its characters through things a reader wouldn't otherwise tolerate. You can bear a great deal when you know where it's going.
The safety is the mechanism. That reframes most of the criticism as a complaint that the genre works.
