Genre convention says yes — the HEA is close to definitional. Plenty of great love stories say no. Is a tragic love story a romance that broke the rules, or a different genre altogether?

Everyone has one that works every single time, however obvious the machinery. Name it. No qualifying, no "I know it's silly, but".

It outsells nearly everything. It's also the genre most reliably treated as a guilty pleasure by people who'd never call a mediocre thriller guilty. The pattern is not subtle: the genre written mostly by women, mostly for women, is the one that needs defending. What's the most snobbish thing anyone has said to you about what you read — and what did you say back?
