Can you write honestly about people who never consented?
Your memoir is also your family's biography, and nobody asked them. Siblings, exes, parents. What, if anything, do you owe them?

Quotation marks around words nobody can verify. Standard practice, and quietly strange when you look straight at it.

Every memoir is a novel the author has agreed to be sued over
Nobody remembers a conversation from thirty years ago. They remember a gist and reconstruct the rest, shaped by what the book needs. We accept this and call it nonfiction, because the alternative is admitting the genre runs on a polite fiction about memory. Where does reconstruction stop being honest?
