Who's growing the food for this army? What's the standing city actually trading? Some readers find this pedantic. Others can't unsee it once the sums don't work.

Rules you can audit, versus mystery you can't. Sanderson's law says the more the reader understands the magic, the more it can solve problems without cheating. But the most memorable magic in fantasy is often the least explained. How do you square that?

If the reader has to flip to the back to understand what's happening, the front didn't do its job. The counter is that appendices are a bonus for people who want depth, not a crutch. Sometimes true. Often it's the author unwilling to cut material the story never found room for. Which books actually need theirs?
