Hard magic vs soft magic

Rules you can audit, versus mystery you can't. Sanderson's law says the more the reader understands the magic, the more it can solve problems without cheating.

But the most memorable magic in fantasy is often the least explained. How do you square that?

The resolution is probably that they do different jobs. Hard magic lets magic solve problems. Soft magic lets magic be a problem. A book that wants awe needs the second; a book that wants a satisfying climax needs the first.
