Started the club
One mystery a fortnight. We stop at the reveal, everyone posts their accusation, and then we read on together. This is a Chaptra house club — set up and moderated by us to get the conversation going. Open to everyone; jump in anywhere.
Cosy vs hardboiled: which ages better?
Cosies date through their social assumptions. Hardboiled dates through its attitudes to basically everyone. Which is easier to read now with a straight face?
Nishant Kumar1 reply#chaptra-houseThe detective you'd actually want on your case
Not the most entertaining to read. The one you'd genuinely want working it if it were your family.
Nishant Kumar2 replies#chaptra-housePost your accusation before chapter 20
Standing thread for the current read. Name, method, motive. No edits after the reveal — we can all see the timestamps.

Agatha Christie is a better engineer than she is a writer — and that's precisely why she outsold everyone
The prose is plain. The characters are types. The settings are interchangeable. And the machinery is close to perfect. She worked out that the genre's actual product is the click of a mechanism, and she built mechanisms better than anyone before or since. Calling that "not really writing" says more about our idea of writing than about her.
