We read true crime and we're not entirely comfortable about it. This club is for the second thought, not just the first. This is a Chaptra house club — set up and moderated by us to get the conversation going. Open to everyone; jump in anywhere.
What they're talking about
Where's your personal line?
Recent cases? Living perpetrators? Unsolved ones where the family is still waiting? Child victims? Most of us have a line somewhere. Where's yours, and why there?

There are a handful of famous cases where public attention moved things. Against that, a lot of harassment of innocent people by amateur sleuths. Honest net assessment?

Not the most gripping. The one that treated the dead as people rather than plot.
Nishant Kumar2d agoTrue crime is entertainment made out of a real family's worst day, and calling it "research" doesn't change that
The genre runs on real names, real photographs, real grief — packaged for a commute. The usual defence is that it raises awareness or pressures cold cases. Occasionally true. Mostly it's a defence written after the fact for something we consume because it's gripping. I read it too. That's rather the point of the club. So: is there an ethical way to do this, and has any book managed it?
