Written in 1929, and about half of them now read as period pieces. But the spirit — no supernatural, no undisclosed twins, no unclued poisons — is basically a fair-play contract. Which still hold? Which deserve to go?

The locked-room mystery is a puzzle wearing a novel as a disguise — and that's exactly why it's the purest thing in crime fiction
Character is thin. Prose is functional. The setting exists to have a door in it. And none of that is a flaw, because the contract is completely explicit: here is a problem, here is every piece you need, beat me to it. No other genre is that honest about what it's for. Disagree?
