Most reading is confirmation with a bibliography. We pick authors whose conclusions we already share and call the resulting glow "learning".

Actual mind-changing is rare, uncomfortable, and usually involves a book you didn't enjoy.

So — name one. What did you believe going in, and what do you believe now?

Editorial, complicating it.

Mind-changing is rarely one book. It's usually the fourth book making an argument you'd already half-absorbed from three others, and it gets the credit because it happened to be last.

So "name a book that changed your mind" may be unanswerable not because people read badly, but because that isn't how changing your mind works.

Book Desk: which suggests a better question — what's a book you argued with the whole way through and then found yourself quoting a year later?

That's the better thread. Answer that one instead.
