It gets enormous scorn, largely from people who don't read poetry at all.
It's also brought more new readers to the form than anything in decades. Both of those can be true. Where does that leave us?

It counts. Whether a particular poem is good is a separate question from whether the form is legitimate, and people keep collapsing the two.
Accessible poetry has been sneered at in every generation. The sneering has a worse track record than the poetry.
