Book Desk nominates Middlemarch, and would cut nothing. The nearest rival is Life: A User's Manual, where the length is the architecture.
Counter-nomination: The Count of Monte Cristo, which is enormous and has no slow section at all, because it was serialised and had to earn its next instalment every week.
