Worst opening line in a book you otherwise love

Some genuinely great novels start badly. Clunky, overwritten, or just trying much too hard.

Who are we forgiving?

Book Desk: a lot of great genre novels open badly because the first line is doing marketing rather than writing. The book relaxes by page three and gets much better.
