So we all have had a dose of books in the range of worst to best. We had a thread on books which we could not finish - but that was not necessarily beacsue it was worst(we wouldn't be able to judge fully till we completed it).
So which is the worst book that you have read? and can you give reasons in brief? You may have more than one book too in that list. Not taking 'worst' in its literal sense(meaning we can group more than one book in that category).
All chetan bhagat books.... read 2 of them... worst books ever !!!
It's difficult to think of just one worst book... :) It is inevitable that now and then, you hit upon a rancid nut.
Two that I can think of now:
Current Show - Perumal Murugan: I loved One Part Woman and Pyre, so I bought three more. This was the first one I read and found it thoroughly disgusting by the time I finished it. The issue I had was the frequent mentions of globs of spit, sweat, dirt and urine (by frequent I mean at least once in every page or so) made me want to throw up. I must admit I don't remember the last time any book invoked such a physical effect. Maybe that indicates how powerful the writing is but for all this trouble, there isn't any story at all. Very disappointed. Also, it is not translated by Aniruddhan Vasudevan who did a splendid job with the other two. I'm tempted to read the original to see how it goes, but not any time soon.
Intervention - Robin Cook There was a time when I loved his books and covered the entire series, but it's been degenerating in the past years. This book, I think, is one of his very worst. Firstly, it is a cheap imitation of the Dan Brown style storyline except it was too odd. Then, the annoying couple - Jack Stapleton and Laurie Montgomery - I'm honestly tired sick of them and they're crankier than usual in this one. Not to mention the lousy ending...

I agree about Robin Cook. I don't even remember the last book of his that I read but stopped reading his books after 2008 I think.
twilight saga and wait for it...aryavarta chronicles(Had krishna udayasankar written it with her original characters, I could tolerate it. But she took characters out of our epic and twisted them at her will.I hated it really.)
For me, it has to be The Palace of Illusions. Had it not been a book club pick (the other book club), I would not have completed it. I see people raving about it and fail to understand why. It read like a fan-fiction of a desi show.

My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk. I did not at all enjoy reading this book. I don't even remember most of it, only that I had a tough time finishing it. I have observed that many literary works which are awarded fail to interest me.
Chetan Bhagat's books. Only Five Point Someone was worth reading. Rest all were too filmy for my liking. Same goes for Sundari Venkatraman. Same storyline in all her books.
I'd like to add to this discussion, that our perception and judgment of 'good' and 'bad' books will likely change with growing age, knowlege/education and experience. (And often radically so.)
For example, as a kid I loved everything Star Wars. But boy, is there a lot of garbage hiding under that franchise. So many stories never really captured the 'spirit' of the original films, but instead transplanted random fantasy/action plots into the SW universe.
On the other hand, I love re-reading classic novels and literature atm, which I simply couldn't understand and thus value enough when I was younger.
ohh..btw..chetan bhagat ones I forgot to mention..I pushed those nightmarish experience so far back in my mind, it was like they don't exist..:-P

Very very sorry for late reply. Somehow skipped your message.:-( I love 'degodding' of characters. And if these are original characters this series would have been a great one( alveit with a few plotholes). But the basic characteristics of the epic characters have been changed at her will. She love shikhandin somehow, and all the achievements of arjun ( including his friendship with krishna and his often praised self control ) is striped from him and gifted to her shikhandin. I have read the book long ago but I remember partha using brahmastra or something on ashwatthamain coz of some tiny quarrel or something. Quite the ooposite of the arjuna of the mahabharata. This is just an example tha pissed me off and I am not even an arjun fan. Yudhistir's portrayal is as dark as blackhole. Only characterization I could tolerate was that of panchali's. Here also Her friendship with govinda is twisted into some unrequitted love. I don't know, many have praised the series. There must be something I am missing. It was just not my cup of tea. Hope you didn't mind the delay in reply. Looking forward to hear what is your view of the series in a bit detail.
