Henri Charrière - Papillon

An extraordinary tale and fascinating perspective told by Henri Charriere (aka Papillon) about his more than 20 years in various French prisons in horrific conditions for a murder he did not commit. The real-life plot line is mind-boggling as it's told in unencumbered narrative. But what struck me was Papillon's unwavering commitment to his goal--cavale--escape. His strategizing, planning, alliance building, and risk-taking are all bound up in his perceptions of right and wrong, challenged under the most dire circumstances and with his potential freedom at stake. This is a book about the tenacity of the human spirit, where even some of his captors were rooting for his escape. It's a book about deal making, political savvy, motivation, and ultimately achievement. It make you think while marveling at the scope and sacrifices that marked his adventure.
