The author of The Last Empress retraces the lives of the mysterious monk who ruled the royal family, and the second richest man in Imperial Russia that led to the winter night in 1916 when the latter murdered the former. He provides details of the crime pieced together, or at least proposed, from recently released information in the St. Petersburg police files. He also follows the young prince and princess in exile, social lions of the western capitals until the 1960s. Among the newly published photographs is one of the corpse.
