The Black Hole

"The Black Hole" is a work in which I seek to blend elements of science fiction, human dramas, and detailed character study in a story that use a scientific basis for the depiction of a romance between two complex individuals, outlining the way that an astronomical occurrence allows them to transcend time and space. The text uses a non-linear narrative to explore the various phases of the relationship between Jack and Nancy, first delving into their past to the genesis of their love. This foundation leads to the manifestation of a port of time travel that takes Jack to another dimension of time, leaving Nancy behind to ponder his fate. Eventually Jack's reappearance allows him to share his finding with a professor, and he describes how he has been able to return to the present through the same type of portal. The complication exists in Nancy's subsequent marriage to Richard in Jack's absence, and this conflict brings the human aspects of this story to the forefront. Nancy's unhappiness at Richard's distance prompts her to accept Jack's invitation to return to their past, leaving an angry and bitter Richard behind, even as the professor and Bill ponder the ultimate destination of their two friends. "The Black Hole" balances this scientific theme with an emotional theme of devotion and romantic divergences, and the means by which Nancy and Jack are able to work out their differences over his disappearance provides a realistic balance to this time- travel scenario.
