About this book

The basic mantra of acting is "Know Yourself" ie "Know thy self" and to get this basic mantra, Virendra Rathoreji's book "Switch on Switch of Acting Method", is a great effort to learn acting. I wholeheartedly congratulate him. He has tried to explain the mantra of learning acting in a very simple and easy way. But the more simple and easy it is presented, the deeper it is. Getting to the bottom of that matter, understanding and recognizing yourself, your emotions, will be easier by following the process in this book. In this book, every aspect of acting is explained with excellent examples. The rest is up to you how much you understand yourself by examining all these things. In acting, "You are the instrument and you are the one playing", so it is up to you and only you to understand and fine tune yourself. And all this is possible with austerity, madness and a real passion to be an actor. Once again, best wishes to Virendraji ! -Paintal, Popular Actor, Comedian, FTII Alumni, Former Head of the Acting Department of FTII

Key themes

Self-Discovery and Introspection
This is the foundational theme, positing that an actor's ability to truthfully portray characters stems from a deep understanding of their own inner world. The book guides the reader through processes of identifying and confronting personal emotions, biases, and psychological patterns, which are essential for authentic performance.
Emotional Mastery and Authenticity
Building on self-discovery, this theme addresses the practical application of understanding emotions – how to 'switch on' and 'switch off' them effectively and truthfully. It's about accessing a wide emotional range without resorting to artificiality, ensuring performances are genuine and resonate deeply with an audience.
The Actor as Instrument
This theme emphasizes that an actor's entire being – mind, body, voice, and spirit – is their primary tool. It highlights the unique demand of the craft where the artist *is* the medium, necessitating constant refinement, care, and understanding of one's own physical and psychological apparatus.
